FROM THE WORLD MASTERS IN SYDNEY.... Thursday 15 Oct 2009
Glenelg Rebels have 10 players, past and current, who are representing South Australian Masters playing in the World Masters Games in Sydney.
Over 35’s representatives are Nat Hailstone, Jenny Turner, Sue Campbell and Robyn Venning-Smith.
Over 45’s representatives are Vicki Sloan, Sylvia Barrett, Marsha Holley, Vicky Kolen, Denise and myself as the playing coach.
Games commenced Sunday 11th October with both teams starting with wins. The Over 45’s got to play on Diamond 1 at Blacktown Olympic Park which was a great experience. Sunday night was the opening ceremony that commenced at the showgrounds with all competitors marching into ANZ Stadium experiencing what the athletes did at the 2000 Olympics.
The over 45’s are currently sitting 2nd in Pool A and only need to win their last match to ensure they have a chance at the medal play offs. Thursday’s game saw them up against the top side which had a composite of Queenslanders and Canadians and the victors were SAMS which is a great confidence booster going into the last round robin game.
The over 35’s started off well but have had a few losses which has put them slightly behind the eight ball but are still within reach of being able to play off for a medal.
Today’s game saw one of die hard members suffer an injury however which may see her out for some of the season. Nat was sliding into 3rd when she injured her knee which has unfortunately put her out for the rest of the tournament.
All of the Glenelg Rebels players are doing the club very proud. Vicki Sloan is having a blinder with the bat with a current batting average of .812. Sue Campbell is doing a great job on the pitching mound managing to tie up quite a few opposition players. The newest member to the club, Marsha, and ‘Rookie’ Robyn are playing well in their first Masters Tournament.
Friday is the last round robin and then finals commence Saturday. Hopefully both teams will be in the medal play offs and I want to wish all the girls representing SAMS from Glenelg good luck. The motto is ‘Show No Mercy’. (Lesley Claxton) |
